TANZANIA II: OFF TO THE COAST
In this post we explore the island of Zanzibar and the coast of Tanzania during the winter of 2020.
In this post we explore the island of Zanzibar and the coast of Tanzania during the winter of 2020.
We left Kenya early to join a pre-Christmas safari with my brother who came from Switzerland to Tanzania. Overall we spent a bit more than a month in Tanzania exploring not only the vast savannas of the north but also the awesome beaches and the island life of Zanzibar.
More than three weeks in Egypt are enough for us and after the cultural overload, we were longing for some distraction. Checking possible destinations south to Egypt it turned out that Kenya is the next possible one. Sudan is too unstable, Ethiopia just started off a civil war and Somalia is obviously also off the table. So we organized a PCR test in Cairo and got on a plane straight to Kenya. Straight? Well, that would have been too easy. Of course, we only found a connection through the United Arab Emirates with a stop in the middle of the…
This travel blog takes you through Egypt with all its glorious sites. From Cairo to Alexandria, Hurghada, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel.
After spending little time in the west of Turkey we continue to discover the capital of Turkey and the less travelled Black Sea Coast. This way we try to avoid the heat of the Mediterranean and still visit the north of Turkey before it’s getting too cold.
Our adventure across Turkey starts in the nowhere-land that represents the southern Greece-Turkish border. In this blog post we'll travel as far as Ankara and discover on the way lovely cities such as Iznik, Bursa or Eskisehir. One of the highlights is the Uludag National Park.
In this blog post, we’ll talk about our journey across the eastern part of mainland Greece. In roughly ten days we made our way to the border with Turkey. On the way, we took in as much as possible, exploring archeological sites, enjoying beaches and climbing in the mountains.
In the course of three weeks, we explored Greece. We were delighted that Greece still boasts of a lot of untouched nature, making it an awesome destination for exploring off the beaten path.
We decided to continue our travel through Italy in order to get east. To make Italy more adventurous, we have chosen less travelled roads and national parks.
Soon after the ferry to Spain we made our way to Portugal. Even during this difficult travel time, Portugal has stayed open and found a good compromise between safety precautions and enabling tourism. Having already visited Porto and Lissbon, we were excited to see more of Portugal and explore its coast. ALGARVE Although many places in the Algarve are touristic there are still a few remote beaches and with COVID going on we were lucky to experience fewer tourists as usual. Our trip through the Algarve started on July 8. After a quick visit to Tavira, we drove on to…
We made a run for it. Shortly after our last blog post and the hundred days celebration we took our chances to get out of Marrakech and into Zone 1. Our journey finally continues outside the 5km radius of Marrakech.
Hundred Days. TWO-THOUSAND-FOUR-HUNDRED hours. That’s how long we’ve now been stuck in this campground in Marrakech. If all goes well, we will not stick around much longer, so we thought it's time to start blogging again. CAMP LIFE SINCE OUR LAST POST Over the last weeks, we led a regular life on the campground with all its ups and downs. Across language barriers and age gaps we formed new friendships and despite some repetition in the conversational topics (weather and lockdown rumours are high on the list), we had some great days and evenings. Most of the time we kept…
Time flies by and we’re getting closer to being 2 months on the same campsite. I expected to celebrate my birthday somewhere in West Africa, but here we are… This post will be another challenge in not becoming trivial and not repeating ourselves, but such is the sedentary life: dominated by routine.
As the lockdown continues this blog continues without the “on Tour” part of its name. Therefore we decided to keep the bi-weekly rhythm for now. Little has significantly changed since the conclusion from our last post. That’s both great as well as disappointing. This post might be a little more philosophical than the past, but hey, we have time...
We spent the last 14 days staying on the campground. No shopping trips, no other big adventures, just daily life in a camper van. Combined with a headache in the first days of week 8 we decided to merge two blog posts into one.
And so it begins… Confinement. We left our secure home to travel, experience new places and meet new people with their own way of living. Whether we make it to South Africa or not was unsure form the beginning, but trying it and exploring this unknown was all the appeal.
This week consisted of fixing our first problem (tires) and then being caught in the global pandemic of COVID-19. We arrived Sunday afternoon in Marrakech and except for supermarkets and hospitals (we’ll come to that later), we have not yet seen much of the city.
This week took us back in time, brought us to the deserts, and tested our skills at tire changing. Crossing Morocco has been a great pleasure and we're not done yet.
